Sony just announced the PlayStation 3 update to version 2.20 which includes the new Blu-Ray 2.0 (aka BD-Live). This should include downloadable video content, ringtones, interactive movie based games and more. Expect to see this update later this month. The update will also allow you to copy photos and music playlists over USB from your PS3 to your PSP. The rest of the new features are:

– “Resume play” will enable PS3 system to start playing a Blu-ray disc
and DVD at the point it was stopped, even if the disc had been
removed.(*1)
– “Audio Output Device” will be a new Remote Play setting, enabling PSP
to serve as a remote control for music played through PS3.
– PS3 system’s Internet browser will be enhanced: Video files directly
linked from a Web page will be able to be streamed, and the browser’s
view speed will be improved.
– DivX and WMV format videos that are larger than 2GB will be playable.
– “Mosquito Noise Reduction” will be added as an AV setting in the
control panel of the DVD/BD player for improved movie playback.(*2)

That’s right sports fans - the venerable PS3 is going to be getting video downloads according to reliable sources like the Wall Street Journal and Financial Times (you have to trust a paper that’s daring enough to be printed on pink paper).

According to these two newspapers, Sony will unveil video downloads as part of the revamped PSN Store, due to be available in April. This is most likely what president Howard Stringer is talking about when he discusses “expanding the PlayStation Network”.

Rumor has it that an insider at Sony divulged information on a new 120-160gb model of the PS3, which will be packed with the Dual Shock 3 and will also be the same price as the 80gb.

IGN also reports various sources have told the website that a recent Gamestop conference call reportedly confirmed the death of the 80 GB PlayStation 3 model. The sources also allege that in its place Sony will release a 120 GB version packaged with ready-to-rumble DualShock 3 controllers.

How sweet would that be to get double the space and a DualShock 3 all for the same price as the current 80GB model? Yeah, that’d be sweet.

According to GameStop, the highly anticipated Resistance: Fall of Man 2 is set to be released on September 3rd, 2008 and will retail for $59.99 in the US. Details for other countries aren’t available yet.

GameStop and EB Games are taking reservations for Resistance 2. For $5, gamers can reserve a copy and be ensured that they will have a copy of the game the day it is released.

According to research done by PSX Extreme, it appears there has been an FCC filing, Sony will be releasing the Ceramic White PlayStation 3 in North America.

The system has been available in Japan since last November. According to GamesIndustry.biz, a letter from Sony Japan proves that the machine was submitted to the FCC and the American Telecommunications Certification Body in October of last year, requesting “short-term confidentiality to avoid premature release of sensitive information prior to marketing or release of the product to the public.”

Rumor has it that the PSP game Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters may be heading to the PS2 early next year. GameStop currently has this game listed on their website with a February 12 release date.

Engadget just posted some info that there was a hidden “easter egg” of sorts in the new PS3 2.01 firmware. A notation by “Vibration Function” stated that the DualShock3 will be “available for purchase in early 2008″. Good news for those of you waiting to get your hands on one of these.

The PS3 should have an update later this month that will add support for the next generation of Blu-ray playback features. The name being given for this update is “profile 1.1″ and should include features such as picture-in-picture, support for downloadable content and much more.
